Four teenage girls have tragically drowned in a pond at Malkaderi village, Gagarawa Local Government Area, Jigawa State.
The incident occurred on Saturday evening, according to local sources, when the girls, all from the same family, went swimming in the pond.
A resident who spoke to Newsmen revealed that the victims were discovered after they had already drowned. Good Samaritans recovered their bodies from the pond.

Confirming the incident in a statement on Sunday, the spokesman for the Jigawa State Police Command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, provided further details on the tragic event.
He said, “In a tragic and devastating incident reported to the Command on September 28, 2024, at about 1530hrs, five teenage girls went to swim in a pond at Malkaderi village, Gagarawa LGA. Sadly, four of them drowned.”

Police officers, alongside local divers, rushed to the scene and initiated a rescue operation.
The victims were evacuated to the Gagarawa Primary Health Care Centre, where a medical doctor confirmed the deaths of the four girls. Sahura was treated, resuscitated, and later discharged.
The Jigawa State Commissioner of Police, CP AT Abdullahi, expressed his deep condolences to the bereaved family and relatives, offering prayers for the repose of the victims’ souls.
In his statement, CP Abdullahi also issued a stern warning to parents and guardians to closely monitor their children, advising them to prevent swimming in ponds, rivers, and streams, particularly during the rainy season when water levels are high.
The bodies of the deceased have been released to their family for burial.
The incident serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers posed by unsupervised swimming in natural bodies of water.
