Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State and the Czech Republic Ambassador to Nigeria, Pavel Mikes, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the provision of light rail (electronic train) system for Kano city metropolitan area using the power generated from the Independent Power Project at Challawa-Gorge and Tiga dams.
The objectives of the MoU which was signed at Kano Hovernor’s Lodge, Aminu Kano House, Asokoro, Abuja, include designing, manufacturing and assembling low-flow trams, electric locomotives, subway train units and or trolley buses as the need arises: construction of standard gauge tracks within Kano metropolitan city.
Others are developing and management of data base of all passengers entering and exiting the trains and movement of the trains: servicing and repairs of the trains and supply of parts and training of staff and management.
According to a statement by the governor’s spokesperson, Halilu Dantiye, a comprehensive light rail master plan for Kano will also be developed to provide the basis for detailed terms of contract.
The statement added that while Kano state government would finance the project in different phases as identified and agreed upon, the Czech Republic Embassy and its agencies would provide the services and materials also as identified and agreed upon.
