According to reports, former president, Goodluck Jonathan might have begun a period of self-exile in Cote d’Ivoire to avoid being arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
According to SEWS, Jonathan went to the country last week after hearing reports of an impending arrest over money laundering allegations.
The sources also reportedly said that the renewed attacks in the Niger Delta were due to “the decision by President Muhammadu Buhari to renege on his promise that his predecessor had ‘nothing to fear’ from him (Buhari) after he handed over the reins of power on May 29, 2015”. Jonathan had earlier been accused of sponsoring the Niger Delta Avengers, a new militant group which has claimed the recent attacks. Earlier reports had it that President Muhammadu Buhari and Jonathan were planning a meeting over the renewed attacks.
