Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) a German NGO, has commenced peace mediation training for officers of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in a bid to strengthen peace and security in Nigeria.
Mrs Hildegard Kigozi, Country Representative of KAS in Nigeria, made the disclosure on Monday in Abuja at the opening ceremony of the five-day training.
She said that the intensive training would go a long way in introducing the officers and men of the Corps to the latest mediation and conflict prevention skills.
She said that the prevailing security challenges in the country make it mandatory for the NSCDC to be equipped with such skills in line with international best practice.
Commandant General of the NSCDC, Mr Abdullahi Muhammadu, said that capacity building was vital to the operations of the Corps, especially in the area of peace building and conflict prevention.
Muhammadu, represented by Emmanuel Adeoye, the acting Director, Crisis Management in NSCDC, said that the NSCDC would to partner relevant stakeholders to ensure peace and stability in Nigeria.
“My sincere aspiration is that the Corps takes it rightful position among the security agencies in the country.
“This is the third priority on my agenda and it is not just a coincidence that a foreign NGO is partnering with us on this.
“In furtherance of this noble gesture, this year’s edition is meant to be a follow-up edition to previous ones, and to give room for expansion in numbers of chartered officers for the Corps,” he said.
The CG enjoined the selected officers for the training to make the best use of the opportunity to enhance their future engagement in world peace advocacy, peace building and crisis management.
In his remarks, Mr Andrea Lammel, a member of the German Parliament, expressed optimism that the training would help address some of the conflicts in Nigeria.
