Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has sworn in seven members of the State Independent Electoral Commission (BSIEC).
The governor, during the inauguration in Makurdi on Thursday, tasked the Commission, led by Dr. John Chen as Chairman, to immediately begin processes for the conduct of free, credible, and inclusive council polls.
Alia emphasized the importance of the members’ nonpartisan stance, outstanding qualifications, integrity, and commitment to democratic principles, which are fundamental to Benue’s progress and democracy’s survival.

He stated, “This underscores the critical role that the commission plays in laying the foundation for our democracy as local councils and wards serve as the primary interface between the government and the people.”
The governor urged the Commission to ensure the consolidation of democracy by conducting free, fair, and credible elections that accurately reflect the will and aspirations of the people of Benue.
He assured the members of the government’s commitment to upholding the Commission’s independence and pledged full support in the discharge of their duties, emphasizing the government’s dedication to transparent, credible, and inclusive electoral processes.
Alia expressed gratitude to the House of Assembly for its role in the screening and confirmation of the BSIEC members.
In his response, the Commission’s chairman, Chen, affirmed members’ understanding of their duties and the people’s yearnings in Benue.
He assured that the Commission would not disappoint the governor and the people, emphasizing their clear vision of the state’s expectations.
