Following the Supreme Court’s affirmation of his second term election victory, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State has taunted Ladi Adebutu, the appellant from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), urging him to prepare for another political battle against the ruling party in 2027.
Abiodun made these remarks while speaking to journalists in his hometown of Iperu, shortly after returning from Abuja where the Supreme Court delivered its judgement on Friday.
Adebutu, along with the PDP, had contested Abiodun’s victory at the election petition tribunal, challenging the outcome of the March 18, 2023, governorship election in Ogun State.
Governor Abiodun emerged victorious in the election, securing a total of 276,298 votes, while Adebutu garnered 262,383 votes, placing him second with a margin of 13,915 votes behind the winner.
Despite the cancellation of the election in 99 polling units with over 40,000 voters, which surpassed the margin of victory, the Supreme Court rejected Adebutu and the PDP’s plea for a rerun in these units.
In response, Governor Abiodun ridiculed the opposition, stating, “We hope our opponent who has been making a lot of noise about a rerun can prepare for a rerun in 2027.”
He further emphasized his focus on building on the achievements of his administration since assuming office in 2019, promising forthcoming developments for the people of Ogun State.
Abiodun expressed gratitude to leaders of his party, notably acknowledging the support of President Bola Tinubu, whom he credited with contributing to his successful election victory.
Governor Dapo Abiodun’s confident stance and future aspirations after his recent legal victory project a determined outlook as he looks beyond the current political challenges towards the future of Ogun State’s governance.
