Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State recently convened a meeting with traditional rulers across the state to discuss plans for reconstituting the Council of Obas and Chiefs.
The gathering took place over the weekend in Ibadan, the state capital, and was attended by traditional rulers from the five geopolitical zones in the state.
The Council, which has not been sitting since 2011, has been a matter of concern for the state government.

Represented by his Deputy, Barrister Abdul-Raheem Adebayo Lawal, Governor Makinde expressed his administration’s commitment to resolving all issues surrounding the Council and ensuring its functionality.
“We have engaged the monarchs in consultative activities relating to the Council of Obas and Chiefs in Oyo State,” said Governor Makinde.
“The governor, in his wisdom, has decided to do something about it in such a way that the Council becomes functional again.”
He highlighted the importance of the Council, noting that since 2011, it has not convened, despite the role of royal fathers as custodians of culture in various local government areas and zones of Oyo State.
Governor Makinde emphasized that his administration had sought recommendations and suggestions from the traditional rulers to reconstitute the Council effectively.
He stated, “We have received observations and suggestions from the five geopolitical zones of the state, Ibadan zone, Oyo, Ibarapa, Ogbomoso, and Oke-Ogun zones.”
The governor’s engagement with the traditional rulers underscores his commitment to promoting stability and development in Oyo State through the reconstitution of the Council of Obas and Chiefs.
