14 December 2014 The United Nations Security Council has condemned in the strongest terms the 12 December terrorist attack on the Israeli Embassy in Athens, Greece, underscoring the continuing threat posed by terrorism to global peace and security.
In the early hours of Friday morning, a number of assailants reportedly sprayed the Embassy of Israel in the Greek capital with gunfire, hitting the building multiple times. According to media reports, the attack did not cause any casualties or serious damage.
In a press statement issued yesterday evening, the 15-member Council commended the Greek Government’s response to the incident including its “unequivocal condemnation and immediate commencement of an investigation” into the attack and emphasized the need to bring the perpetrators to immediate justice.
“Terrorism, in all its forms and manifestations, constitutes one of the most serious threats to peace and security,” the Council declared.
“Any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivations, whenever and by whomsoever committed.”
The members of the Security Council also reaffirmed the need to combat “by all means” and in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations and all obligations under international law all threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts.
