Governor of Taraba State, Darius Ishaku, and his Benue State counterpart, Samuel Ortom have been tasked with bringing the incessant killings in the border communities of the two states to an end as soon as possible.
President, Tiv Cultural and Social Association, Taraba state Chapter, Hon. James Nungwa gave the charge in Jalingo on Tuesday while reacting to recent killings and abductions of people in Takum local government area of the state. According to him, the call has become imperative in order to bring permanent peace to the communities.
Tiv youths from Benue state and Jukun youths in Taraba have been killing and kidnapping innocent people in recent times thereby fuelling tensions and fears of escalation of the clashes.
Although recent history showed that people from the two ethnic extractions once lived in peace sharing a similar fate; political and economic marginalization. However, the conflict that has been on for years keeps degenerating. It has been described as the most violent dispute in central Nigeria since the Nigeria Civil War. The conflict has been about land,traditional and modern political power as well as indigeneship.
