Panic erupted in the Okpuno area of Awka on Friday morning when gunmen, operating in a sports utility vehicle, abducted an unidentified man who was reportedly returning after dropping off his children at school.
Eyewitnesses said the attackers, driving a stainless-colored Highlander SUV without a number plate, fired shots into the air to disperse bystanders before seizing their victim and fleeing the scene.
The gunfire caused chaos as passersby scrambled for safety.

The Anambra State Police Command has confirmed the incident and assured residents that efforts are underway to rescue the victim and apprehend the perpetrators.
In a statement on Friday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, described the abduction — which was captured in a now-viral video — as “unfortunate” and condemned the brazen daylight attack.
“The three armed men operating in a stainless-colored Highlander without a plate number shot indiscriminately and abducted the victim,” Ikenga said.
“The Command has activated its tactical teams and will leave no stone unturned to ensure the victim is rescued alive.”
The Police urged residents to remain calm and report any useful information to aid the ongoing operation.
