The sports loving governor of Abia State, Chief Theodore Orji, has splashed a N10 million cash gift on the Abia Warriors Football Club Umuahia for qualifying for the country’s prestigious first division league.
Governor Orji who announced the cash donation during the investiture of new patrons, launch of the club website and club colours which took place at the Michael Okpara Auditorium, Umuahia, thanked both the management and players of Abia Warriors for joining Enyimba FC, Aba, another state-owned club to play in the national league.
The governor who was happy on the club’s exploits so far, charged the players of Abia Warriors to go all out to win the division one national league.
According to him, the state government will continue to support the club to grow to become like English premiership clubs such as Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool, which he said would not only attract sports lovers to Umuahia but generate revenue for the hospitality industry in the state.
He also said that the state government support to the club was another way of empowering the youths of the state to channel their energies to productive ventures. The engagement of the youths into sporting activities like football, according to Governor, will take them away from crimes and make them responsible citizens of the state.
Abia State deputy governor, Sir Emeka Ananaba, Speaker, Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Ude Oko Chukwu, Mr. Uchechukwu Sampson Ogah, Mr. Emeka Enyema and others graced the occasion.
