The Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Health, Linus Awute has charged members of the Technical Working Group (TWG) of the National Health Act to dedicate themselves to their assignment to ensure successful implementation of the Act.
Linus Awute made this call while speaking at the inaugural meeting of the group on the implementation of the National Health Act (NHACT) held in Abuja recently. Adding, the Act is considered as one of the greatest dividends of the Transformation Agenda of President Goodluck Jonathan in the health sector. He intensified that the Act if successfully implemented will renew Nigeria’s health system by providing clear understanding of the roles of different actors and fostering adherence towards greater efficiency.
The Permanent Secretary also noted that it will re-emphasise and strengthen the role of primary healthcare as the bedrock of the national health system. He observed that in recognition of the potential benefits accruing to successful implementation of the NHACT, the Committee will afford to fail Nigerians.
He further explained that the Committee which is chaired by the Minister of Health, Khaliru Alhassan (Dr) has the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry as co-chair.
According to him, the terms of reference of the Committee include: providing overall technical support to the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) in implementing the National Health Act in Nigeria in line with the National Health Policy and NSHDP; developing detailed media and advocacy plan / toolkit to ensure widespread support for implementation of the National Health Act; carrying out other functions related to the implementation of the National Health Act as may be directed by the Minister of Health; playing advisory roles to the FMOH, parastatals and agencies as well as developing the National Health Act implementation guidelines and manual comprising a comprehensive monitoring & evaluation and performance framework.
Awute reiterated that the Committee is obliged to evolve recommendations and strategies for implementation of the Act in a most effective and efficient manner.
