The House of Representatives Committee on the Navy has announced an investigation into the prolonged detention of naval personnel, Abbas Haruna, who has been held without trial for six years.
The detention is allegedly at the directive of Brigadier General M.S. Adamu.
The Chairman of the Committee, Yusuf Gagdi, disclosed this on Monday in a statement shared via his official social media handle.
Gagdi, who represents Plateau State, vowed that the committee would ensure that those responsible for the unlawful detention are held accountable.
The case gained public attention after Mr Haruna’s wife shared her husband’s plight during an appearance on the popular Abuja-based radio show Brekete Family.
She revealed that her husband had been detained without due process, sparking widespread concern.
In his statement, Gagdi condemned the situation, describing it as “inhumane” and a violation of Haruna’s rights, as guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution.
“The degree of heartlessness exhibited by Brigadier General M.S. Adamu towards his subordinate over a minor incident has drawn widespread condemnation from millions of concerned Nigerians who heard the story,” Gagdi stated.
The committee is expected to begin its investigation into the matter, with many calling for justice and the immediate release of Mr Haruna.
