Former Governor of Abia State and current Senator representing Abia North, Orji Uzor Kalu, has claimed he personally financed the affairs of Abia State during his tenure as governor.
Kalu made the revelation on Monday while speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today programme.
According to the former governor, he did not derive any financial benefit from holding public office, insisting instead that his time in government cost him a significant portion of his personal wealth.

“I spent my own money being governor, like I’m spending my money today being senator,” Kalu said. “I used to finance the state. That is, I never benefited anything from being governor. Rather, I lost a lot of money.”
He further alleged that the federal government under former President Olusegun Obasanjo targeted his businesses during his tenure.
“The federal government took a lot of my businesses. So for me, politics had been more dangerous under the Obasanjo federal government at the time,” he added.
Kalu served as governor of Abia State from 1999 to 2007. He is currently serving his second term in the Senate.
