The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has directed the Force Criminal Investigations Department (FCID) to take over the investigation into the death of a suspect, Tunji Abdulquadri Jimoh, who died in a cell at the Kwara State Police Command headquarters in Ilorin on Friday.
This directive was announced in a statement by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, on Sunday.
IGP Visits Bereaved Family
In a bid to demonstrate commitment to justice and accountability, the IGP visited the family of the deceased in Ilorin on Sunday, December 22, 2024.
He was received by the Balogun Fulani of Ilorin, Alhaji Sadiq Atiku Fulani, who spoke on behalf of the bereaved family. During the visit, the IGP expressed his condolences and assured the family that every effort would be made to uncover the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death.
The statement read, in part:
“The IGP expressed his profound condolences and assured the family that no stone would be left unturned in uncovering the circumstances that led to the tragic incident.
He further reassured the family and the general public that the Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding the highest standards of accountability, professionalism, and respect for human rights.”
Investigation Ordered
The IGP mandated the FCID to handle the case with diligence, ensuring a thorough and impartial investigation into the incident.
He also reiterated the Nigeria Police Force’s zero-tolerance policy toward unprofessional conduct among its personnel, calling on all stakeholders to remain calm and allow the due process of law to take its course.
The IGP emphasized the Force’s commitment to justice, accountability, and respect for human rights, promising that appropriate actions would be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
