The First Lady, Dame (Dr) Patience Jonathan, has denied reports in a section of the media that she is related to one Christopher Awai, who reportedly drowned under suspicious circumstances at the swimming pool of an Abuja hotel.
Mrs Jonathan, in a statement yesterday by her spokesperson, Ayo Adewuyi, also denied that a woman mentioned in media reports as having petitioned the police on the death of Awai, is also not her younger sister.
“We also wish to state without any iota of equivocation that Madam Esther Ebiere Gbonkumor who was mentioned in the news reports as the immediate younger sister of the first lady is not in any way related to Dame (Dr) Patience Faka Jonathan.
“It’s an unfounded rumour which the first lady knows nothing about and we’ll like the public and well-meaning Nigerians to note for the purpose of accurate record and common good”, the statement said.
It would be recalled that Awai died during a party recently organised by Ijaw students of the University of Abuja.
