Ashley Young has insisted he still sees himself as a winger despite making most of his appearances for Manchester United this season as a full-back.
Young was converted into a wing-back and then a defender by manager Louis van Gaal, but he was selected on the right wing in an unconventional 3-2-4-1 formation in the 2-1 win against Swansea on Saturday and responded by delivering the cross for Anthony Martial when the Frenchman scored the opening goal.
“Of course I enjoyed myself,” Young told MUTV. “I’m an out-and-out winger. I’ve played at full-back in the last few weeks but when you are a winger you get to get forward and I enjoyed that.
“There was obviously the defensive side of things to do so I had to be aware of that.”
Van Gaal has used Young at full-back more after Luke Shaw and Antonio Valencia were ruled out with a broken leg and foot surgery respectively.
Young singled out Martial for praise after the France international set up Wayne Rooney’s winner in United’s first victory in nine games.
“He’s shown that week in, week out,” he added. “We’ve just seen back the video of how quick he is going down the line and I wouldn’t want to be facing him. He was fantastic, got the goal obviously and set up Wayne’s one as well.”
