The Imo State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has commenced its selection process for candidates in the upcoming Local Government Area (LGA) Chairmanship and Councillor elections.
These elections, scheduled for September 21, will take place across the 27 LGAs and 305 wards of the state, marking a critical phase in the party’s efforts to solidify its influence in Imo State’s political landscape.
In a recent press statement, Cajetan Duke, the State Publicity Secretary of the APC, highlighted the significance of the ongoing primaries, which aim to reinforce the party’s renewed hope agenda.

Duke described the exercise as a vital step in the APC’s commitment to enhancing the quality of leadership at the grassroots level.
He noted, “The primary election, which is simultaneously ongoing across the wards and LGAs in the state, is expected to be conducted in a free, fair, and transparent manner, ensuring a level playing field for all aspirants.
The party assures all stakeholders of equal opportunities, adhering to the principles of democracy and internal party mechanisms.”
The APC’s leadership is optimistic that this primary election will result in the selection of the most capable and popular candidates to represent the party in the LGA elections.
The party’s commitment to inclusivity, justice, and fair play throughout the primary process underscores its broader goal of fostering a democratic culture within its ranks.
Duke emphasised that ensuring the credibility of the selection process is a top priority for the APC, as it seeks to maintain public confidence and uphold the integrity of the party.
To this end, the party has instituted several measures designed to guarantee a smooth and orderly exercise.
These measures include strict adherence to party guidelines and protocols that aim to mitigate any disruptions or malpractice during the primaries.
Duke further called on all aspirants and party members to demonstrate discipline and respect for the process, urging them to avoid any actions that could compromise the fairness of the elections.
“We urge all aspirants, and party faithful to conduct themselves in a peaceful and orderly manner by eschewing any form of violence or malpractice,” he stated.
The commitment to transparency and democratic principles was echoed by the State Chairman of the APC, MacDonald Ebere.
In a briefing with journalists, Ebere expressed his confidence in the integrity of the primary election process and reassured the public of the party’s dedication to selecting candidates who will serve the people effectively.
He remarked, “We are poised to produce candidates who will not only win the LGA elections but also deliver good governance to our people.
We enjoin all aspirants and stakeholders to embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and work towards the ultimate victory of our great party.”
Ebere’s comments reflect the APC’s broader strategy of focusing on governance and public service, positioning itself as the party that prioritises development and responsiveness to the needs of the citizens.
The primary election, according to Ebere, is not just about selecting candidates but also about reinforcing the party’s commitment to good governance and accountability.
The selection process is expected to culminate in the emergence of candidates for both the Chairmanship and Councillor positions, who will represent the APC in the LGA elections on September 21.
This phase is crucial, as it will determine the calibre of individuals who will carry the party’s vision to the grassroots, influencing policy and development at the local level.
The APC aims to ensure that its candidates are not only electable but also capable of driving positive change in their communities.
As the primary elections unfold, the Imo APC’s leadership remains focused on fostering unity within the party and ensuring that the process reflects the core values of democracy.
By prioritising fairness and inclusivity, the APC hopes to set a standard for internal party democracy that can serve as a model for other political organisations in the state and beyond.
In conclusion, the APC’s approach to these primaries highlights its strategy of strengthening its base through transparent and competitive selection processes.
By doing so, the party aims to not only secure electoral victories but also build a robust framework for sustainable governance at the grassroots level.
As the APC prepares for the LGA elections, the emphasis remains on unity, fair play, and a commitment to the principles that define the party’s vision for a better Imo State.
