Over a thousand of Engr Onyiriuka Stanley Chike’s supporters in Ohaji Egbema Local Government Area have defected from the Social Democratic Party (SDP), with whom he was running for Imo House of Assembly in the 2023 election.
Ahead of the elections on November 11, the politician has aligned himself with the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and declared his support for the party’s governorship candidate, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.
Popular with the voters in his district, Onyiriuka (also known as “Chyko”) gave his rivals a run for their money during the March general election.
This lawmaker and his supporters announced their departure from the SDP on Tuesday, citing “insecurity, bad governance, greed, and harsh policies” as the reasons for their decision.
According to Onyiriuka, the current administration of the All Progressives Congress (APC) must be replaced with the more people-focused administration that he believes Anyanwu would provide.
The gubernatorial election, he insisted, “would serve as a restoration season to stop killing of innocent youths and burning of houses for no reason.” He urged those who were opposed to Imo’s emancipation to have a change of heart.
The APC administration is “very insensitive,” according to Onyiriuka, who vowed to keep rallying good-hearted Nigerians in the three zones against the ruling party.
