The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially set February 3, 2024, as the date for the bye-election for the Jalingo/Yorro/Zing Federal Constituency in Taraba State.
This bye-election follows the passing of the elected member for the constituency, Isma’ila Yushau Maihanci, shortly after the 2023 general election.
As reported by the media, out of the eight aspirants vying for the position from various political parties, six are from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

While the leadership of INEC in the state was unavailable for comment at the time of this report, sources within the commission assured that preparations are underway. Staff members who spoke to the media affirmed that they are awaiting the conclusion of party primaries to ensure a fair playing field for all candidates.
The commission, through its sources, stressed the importance of free, fair, and credible primaries, warning that any violations of electoral laws would not be tolerated.
According to some aspirants, particularly those from the PDP, it is crucial for the state governor, Dr. Agbu Kefas, and the party’s leadership to allow the constituents to freely choose their candidate. They cautioned against interference in the primaries, emphasizing that such actions could hinder the party’s progress.
In response, the PDP, represented by its spokesperson, Andetarang Iramae, assured all aspirants of the party’s commitment to organizing a transparent and impartial primary election.
