The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Edo State has solicited the support of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) ahead of the September 21, 2024 governorship election in the state.
Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, the State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), made this appeal during a familiarisation visit to Mrs. Ifeoma Ben-Ushie, the state NYSC Coordinator in Benin.
Dr. Onuoha emphasized the critical role of NYSC as a stakeholder in Nigeria’s electoral process and highlighted the need for corps members in conducting the upcoming off-season election in September.

He stressed the importance of ensuring that the election is free, fair, and credible, with the votes of the people counting.
“We cannot do it alone, that is why we are here to partner with you,” Dr. Onuoha stated, emphasizing the collaborative effort required for a successful election.
In her response, Mrs. Ben-Ushie thanked the INEC REC for the visit, noting that she was also new to the state. She mentioned the longstanding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between INEC and NYSC, which was reviewed in 2013.
Mrs. Ben-Ushie commended the satisfactory performance of corps members and inspectors but raised some concerns for INEC to address.
She highlighted the need for adequate security, conducive Registration Area Centres (RACs), and prompt payment of allowances for corps members.
Mrs. Ben-Ushie emphasized the importance of providing comfortable and secure RACs with basic amenities, especially in volatile areas. She expressed concern about instances where INEC leaves corps members on their own after elections, posing a threat to their safety.
Mrs. Ben-Ushie urged INEC to ensure that corps members are well taken care of throughout the election process, including providing transportation, security, and returning them safely to their homes after duty.
She emphasized the need for thorough preparations to ensure a smooth election.
