LOS ANGELES, CA–(Marketwired – Mar 3, 2014) – Inktank, the company delivering Ceph — the massively scalable, open source, software-defined storage system — today announced that the Ceph project has been accepted as a mentoring organization for the Google Summer of Code 2014 program, which pairs student developers with open source projects to contribute code. Alongside other members of the Ceph community, Inktank will contribute to the program by providing mentors and other logistical support.
This year’s Google Summer of Code will match student developers with 190 organizations, selected through a competitive process from 370 organizations.
Over the course of three months, Ceph developers will mentor students who have had their submitted proposals accepted. Participating students will be paid a stipend from Google to focus on honing their development skills. Selected students will have the opportunity to work on the Ceph project, which allows users to build massively scalable, software-defined storage clusters. Student applications will be accepted from March 10 to March 21 on the Google Summer of Code site.
For more than a decade, the prestigious Google program has worked with 7,500 students from 97 countries over and 7,000 mentors from 100 countries. Collectively, over 50 million lines of code have been written through these global mentorships.
“We are thrilled the Ceph project has made the cut as a Google Summer of Code mentoring organization,” said Patrick McGarry, director of community at Inktank. “Google has offered student developers a fantastic way to gain hands-on development experience with the open source ecosystem. Our mentors and community look forward to working with talented young developers to grow the Ceph project and to nurture interest in open source development.”
