NEW YORK, NY–(Marketwired – Jan 9, 2014) – AMC Health, a leading provider of end-to-end telehealth solutions, today announced that John Larus has been named to the newly created position of Senior Vice President, Solutions Development – Clinical Trials Division.
Larus’ 25 years of broad-based experience in pharmaceutical development and the application of technology to the clinical trials process further strengthen AMC Health’s ability to expand telemonitoring into new areas within healthcare.
Larus’ wealth of industry experience includes his most recent position as Executive Vice President of Regulatory and Strategic Development for Clinipace, a digital contract research organization (CRO). He is also a co-founder of PharmaLink (now Novella Clinical), the first electronic CRO and was President of Magguzi, an electronic patient-reported outcomes company. Larus also served as Chief Operating Officer at Fulcrum Pharma Developments and held senior management positions at Clintrials Research and AAIPharma Services Corporation.
“I’m excited to be part of a company that has the potential to significantly transform clinical trials,” Larus said. “AMC Health is already a market leader in providing telehealth solutions to at-risk populations and AMC Health has also demonstrated that its telehealth solution when applied to clinical trials is the most efficient way to remotely collect patient data and to improve patient compliance and retention.”
“John has been an important contributor to the early development of many technology solutions that have been introduced into the clinical trials market,” said Michael O’Brien, president of AMC Health – Clinical Trials Division. “With John’s proven track record and deep understanding of clinical technology we are well positioned to serve the needs of our clients and expand our leadership position in the market to include clinical trials.”
There are strong clinical and economic reasons driving the move toward telemonitoring for clinical trials. For example:
- Collecting and entering information manually is very labor intensive and introduces the possibility of human error that can skew the results. Automating data collection via telemonitoring increases speed and accuracy while reducing the per-patient cost of a study.
- According to Compliance in Epilepsy, a 20 percent decrease in medication adherence in a clinical study may result in the need for a greater than 50 percent increase in the sample size in order to maintain equivalent power.
- A study published by the Johns Hopkins University Press that found a trial with 50 percent mean compliance could require approximately five times as many participants as a trial with 100 percent compliance.
