A Jos Magistrates’ Court has sentenced a 19-year-old trader to nine months in prison for robbing an elderly woman in her home.
Magistrate Shawomi Bokkos issued the sentence on Friday after the accused pleaded guilty to the charge.
Bokkos offered the convict an option of a N20,000 fine in lieu of six months imprisonment.
Additionally, the magistrate ordered the convict to pay N30,000 in damages to the victim or serve an additional three months in prison if unable to pay.
Prosecutor Insp. Ibrahim Gokwat told the court that the case was reported on August 23 at the Laranto Police Station by the complainant, Umar Adamu.
According to Gokwat, the convict, along with accomplices still at large, entered the elderly woman’s house, stole her phone and a bag containing the Holy Quran, and threatened her with a knife to prevent her from raising an alarm.
The convict was subsequently apprehended and brought to the station following police investigation.
The offense contravened the Plateau State Penal Code Law.
