Jose Mourinho has not ruled out the possibility of returning to manage Real Madrid one day, but insists he is committed to seeing out his contract with Chelsea.
Mourinho is being lined up by the Spanish giants to succeed beleaguered boss Rafa Benitez next summer, according to a report in The Sun on Thursday, despite the Portuguese’s first spell at the Santiago Bernabeu ending acrimoniously amid clashes with powerful senior players in the squad.
The Chelsea manager’s future at Stamford Bridge remains the subject of intense speculation, despite Wednesday’s 2-0 victory over Porto which guaranteed the Blues a place in the Champions League knockout stages, with the Premier League champions languishing in 14th in the table having lost eight of their first 15 matches.
But despite the struggles of this season, Mourinho, who signed a new four-year contract with Chelsea in August, insists he is committed to remaining at the club until the summer of 2019, although he did not dismiss the idea of a return to the Spanish capital when he leaves.
“I imagine myself finishing my contract with Chelsea,” he told a news conference. “I have three-and-a-half years left. After that I imagine myself coaching, I don’t say every club, because there are some I would say always no, but I imagine myself coaching any club.”
Mourinho also gave his view on the sacking of Garry Monk by Swansea City on Thursday, insisting that the Englishman’s dismissal, when his club lie just one place and point behind Chelsea in the Premier League table, does not make him feel grateful to still have a job at Stamford Bridge.
“I think he is unlucky, not me lucky,” the Portuguese added. “The bad results are not normal but the situation of any manager to keep his job and to have the chance to improve and finish his work — that’s not to be lucky, that’s normal.
