Jose Mourinho has stopped Manchester United being ‘boring’.
But the Portuguese cannot afford another season of Premier League failure.
That is the view of ex-Reds defender Rio Ferdinand, who is delighted the dull style of former Old Trafford manager Louis van Gaal’s reign has been eradicated.
Ferdinand believes Mourinho has improved things since taking charge last summer – and praised him for landing the EFL Cup and Europa League trophy.
Van Gaal led United to fourth and fifth and won the FA Cup but his mundane playing style drew widespread criticism with Ferdinand saying: “I definitely think there’s been an improvement in the way the team’s played.
“The idea of going to Old Trafford isn’t boring like it was for the last couple of years.
“I didn’t enjoy watching Manchester United the last couple of years. This season has been better, so you hope that will continue.”
Mourinho guided United to sixth place in the Premier League after succeeding LVG as well as winning two pieces of silverware.
“For what he was asked to do you’ve got to say he was a success,” added Ferdinand.
“But finishing sixth, when you look at it like that, and if you didn’t have all the other stuff, you would say it would be a disappointing season.
“I think this is a season where he gets a little bit of respite and it’s time to continue and build.”
