Isa Mohammed Ashiru, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for governor of Kaduna State in the recent election, has voiced his satisfaction with the decision of the State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal.
According to Infostride News, the tribunal issued its ruling on the appeal brought by the PDP and its candidate disputing Uba Sani’s election on Thursday.
The ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, and its candidate in the election have claimed that the court dismissed Isa’s plea, casting doubt on the validity of the tribunal’s finding.

Some news outlets claimed the court upheld Sani’s election after rejecting a challenge from the PDP and its candidate, Ashiru, while others claimed the tribunal had fired the governor and declared the election inconclusive.
On Thursday night, Isa released a statement that he had personally signed explaining the ruling to his followers. He said that the court had terminated the sitting governor, but that the dismissal will be finalized at the appeals court.
“the preliminary objection, the tribunal, based on the majority of 2:1 judges upheld the preliminary objection of the respondent to the effect that the application for pre-hearing was done prematurely i.e. before the service of the last set of petitioners’ reply to the 2nd respondent’s reply to the petition,” he said.
“However, the law mandates that the tribunal, in its capacity as a trial court, proceed to pronounce on the merit of the substantive suit, so that if the court of appeal concludes that the trial tribunal erred in its decision on the preliminary objection, it will have the opportunity to rule on the tribunal’s decision in the substantive matter.
Therefore, the trial tribunal agrees with the petitioner on the issue of the margin of victory between the two frontrunners.
Accordingly, “the tribunal by a split decision of 2:1 nullified the election of the governor of Kaduna state, ordered that the Certificate of Return be retrieved and fresh elections be conducted in some polling units in 4 LGAs and the outcome thereof be reckoned before the declaration of the winner of the governorship election in Kaduna state.”
The PDP candidate expressed gratitude to the people of the State for their support thus far and urged everyone to continue acting lawfully as the investigation continues.
“One thing I can assure the good people of Kaduna State is that I will pursue this mandate you freely gave me to its logical conclusion and by the grace of God, victory on our side,” he continued.
