The Kano State Government has recovered more than N27 million from 247 ghost workers, including retirees and deceased individuals, following a payroll audit conducted in March 2025.
Musa Tanko, Director of Public Enlightenment at the Office of the Secretary to the State Government, confirmed the development in a statement. He said those implicated in the payroll fraud would face legal action.
According to Tanko, the discrepancies were uncovered during a validation exercise carried out by the Pay Parade Committee established by the state government.
“The government remains steadfast in its resolve to cleanse the payroll system of irregularities and ensure that those responsible are held accountable,” he stated.
Tanko further disclosed that the committee would soon commence full operations, engaging all relevant stakeholders to conduct a comprehensive review of the entire payroll system.
He added that an in-depth investigation would be launched to determine the full extent of the fraud and identify all individuals involved.
The recovered funds, he said, have already been returned to the Local Government Treasury.
