The Kwara State Police Command has debunked a trending video that purported to show residents of Ilorin protesting at the Emir’s palace over the current economic challenges in the country.
In a statement issued by the spokesperson, DSP Ejire Adeyemi Toun, the Command urged the public to disregard the video and refrain from sharing unverified information or content that could aid the spread of fake news.
The statement described the video as “the handiwork of mischief makers and subversive elements with criminal intent to disrupt the peace and harmony we enjoy in the state.”
According to the statement, the viral video was a doctored version of a socio-cultural event that took place in the forecourt of the Emir’s Palace several years ago. It was manipulated with audio that did not match the content of the video.
The Command clarified, “No such gathering took place in any part of Ilorin in recent times, including the Emir’s Palace.”
The Commissioner of Police, Victor Olaiya, reassured the public that the police, in collaboration with other security agencies, would continue to maintain law and order to ensure that citizens enjoy peace and security in the state.
