The virtues and rare qualities of the late former Minister of Information, Professor Dora Akunyili, have been highlighted in a special valedictory session convened in her honour by the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku and the Management of the Federal Ministry of Information.
The event was held on Monday, June 9, 2014 at the Minister’s Conference room in Radio House, Abuja.
Labaran Maku who appeared tense, described the late Dora Akunyili as “a very strong advocate for the unity of the country; astute administrator; patriot and an outspoken person.” He added that her tireless will to serve brought her into a bold attempt to reposition the country at the on-going National Conference.
Maku also said that the late Dora was “a brilliant scholar and woman with hunger and heart for excellence.” He added that “for this cause, she risked ensuring that Nigeria was rid of fake and adulterated drugs when she served as the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Control (NAFDAC).”
Labaran Maku applauded the late Professor’s forthrightness and commitment to public service and called on Nigerian women to emulate her political zeal by mobilising themselves to seek elective positions.
He further praised the late Minister‘s efforts at establishing a slogan for Nigeria through her vibrant ‘Rebranding Programme’ for the country. Her choice of “Good People, Great Nation” which has become part of Nigeria’s national slogan was also eulogised by Maku.
While describing the impact made on the national imagination as “more than two life time”, Labaran Maku called on Nigerians to imitate her good virtues and continue to pray for the repose of her soul. He also urged members of staff of the Ministry to sign the condolence register to pay their last respect to the departed soul of Dora Akunyili.
Also extolling the virtues of the late Dora Akunyili, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan portrayed her as a patriotic Nigerian and a courageous administrator per-excellence who fought relentlessly against fake drugs in the country.
Yemi-Esan said, NAFDAC achieved the status of acclaimed world-class public service institution as a result of the late Professor’s immense contribution to the Agency.
The Permanent Secretary remarked that Nigerians ought to leave their footprints on the sands of time in the journey of life, for which they will be remembered.
