Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal admitted his team were lucky to escape with a 0-0 draw from their trip to Crystal Palace.
.
Palace were left to rue late missed chances from
Yohan Cabaye and Damien Delaney at Selhurst Park,
while David De Gea tipped Yannick Bolasie’s early
effort onto the bar.
.
“We were not the better team today and that’s a
concern,” Van Gaal said.
.
United have now gone 325 minutes without scoring a
goal, with the blank at Palace following a penalty
shootout defeat to Middlesbrough in the Capital One
Cup and goalless draw with Manchester City.
.
“When you are not creating so many chances you
cannot complain,” Van Gaal said. “Against
Middlesbrough, I thought we had chances to finish,
so that is of more concern. But today we had no
chances to win it.”
.
Ander Herrera and Wayne Rooney blew United’s best
opportunities, which both came in the first half.
.
Van Gaal said: “After 15 minutes we came into the
match, had positional shape and made chances, like
Ander Herrera in the last minute of the first half. You
have to score that.”
.
United play CSKA Moscow on Tuesday at Old
Trafford, when Van Gaal hopes their scoring touch
can return.
.
“When I see the characters, I don’t think they have
doubt about their quality,” he said. “They need one
match, and I hope that’s against CSKA Moscow
because we need the victory.”
.
United fans urged their team to “attack, attack,
attack” and Van Gaal admitted they were within their
rights to be disappointed.
