The PUNCH’s editorial titled, “Official convoys of death” on November 22, 2013, deserves commendation. As noted in the editorial, Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State should be commended for his position in not allowing siren blowing and endless convoys.
It must be noted too that since Dr. Kayode Fayemi became Governor of Ekiti State, we have never seen him use siren or allow a long convoy on his trips. He obeys traffic rules especially the observance of the traffic lights. He has been seen suffering with other Nigerians the rigours of the incessant traffic snarls in any part of the country he travels to. I witnessed one day when the governor packed and sent back some vehicles in his convoy at the Adebayo Area of Ado Ekiti.
No doubt, the two governors should be commended for their civilised conduct of not using the office they occupy to oppress the people. This conduct is recommended for our other highly placed public officials to prevent avoidable deaths and the maiming of the governed by the “official convoys of death”. May the soul of Prof. Festus Iyayi and others, whose deaths had occurred through such reckless convoys, rest in eternal bliss.
