The lifeless body of a man was discovered on Friday under the Okefia Bridge in Osogbo, Osun State.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the deceased, whose identity remains unknown, was found partially unclad, with a bag containing clothes lying beside him.
The body was first noticed around midday by passersby, prompting concerned individuals to alert security personnel.
A local trader, identified as Chibuzor, confirmed that the sighting of the body led to the involvement of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Osun State Command.
The NSCDC personnel were later joined by officials from the Water and Environmental Sanitation Department of Osogbo West Local Government, who collaborated to evacuate the corpse.
The spokesperson for the NSCDC Osun Command, Adeleke Kehinde, disclosed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death had commenced.
“Today, December 27, the lifeless body of an elderly man was discovered under the Oke Fia Bridge in Osogbo,” Kehinde said.
“The incident was promptly reported to the Osogbo West LCDA and the Head of Local Government.
Immediate arrangements were made to evacuate the body to prevent further decomposition.”
Meanwhile, an appeal has been made for tighter security around flyovers in Osogbo.
The Executive Director of the World Institute of Peace (WIP), Lamina Kamiludeen Omotoyosi, called on the Osun State Police Command and the state government to secure the areas to prevent criminal activities.
“The discovery of a lifeless body under the Oke-Fia Bridge, which is still under construction, is alarming. Gradually, these flyovers could become hideouts for criminals if left unsecured.
These areas need to be protected so the common man can feel safe in Osogbo,” Omotoyosi said in a statement on Saturday.
Authorities have assured residents that investigations will continue to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.
