Coming out of the festive period, the current standing of several managers is hardly stable. Are more managerial changes on the way in the Premier League? Who is leading our Sack Race?
How things change in football. Since the last edition of the Sack Race, Louis van Gaal (1/2 to be the next manager to leave his job) has gone from fielding a stodgy but relatively effective team to the brink of losing his job, and asking the press to apologise for writing as such. As ever, it’s results that have done it, with United meekly shuffling out of the Champions League and winning just once, last week’s largely unconvincing success over struggling Swansea, since the middle of November.
Things do seem to have quieted a little since the maelstrom of speculation over Christmas, with an improved performance in the 0-0 draw against Chelsea helping in that respect. However, this is still not the United that anyone could reasonably expect to see, and one suspects one of the big reasons for Van Gaal still being in his job is that sacking him would reflect badly on chief executive Ed Woodward. Still, if results don’t improve, the clanking machinery of United could be set in motion, and perhaps a big indicator toward his future might be if they spend any money in January.
