Louis van Gaal insists he has handed many
chances to young talents at Manchester
United, with Paddy McNair the cream of the
crop.
.
The Dutchman fielded youth products Jesse
Lingaard and Tyler Blackett for the Red Devils’ first
Premier League clash of the season, while by
November’s defeat of Arsenal, McNair had forced
his way into the side.
.
Van Gaal, who has also played young striker James
Wilson despite fierce competition from Robin van
Persie and Radamel Falcao, is impressed with the
talents at Old Trafford, with McNair especially
catching the Dutchman’s eye.
.
He told MUTV: “It is not only Paddy McNair who
has impressed with his development, as I have
given a lot of chances to younger players.
.
“But Paddy McNair has developed himself very
well, not only as a central defender, but now we
are giving him the chance to develop as a full-back
and he did it very well.”
.
And Van Gaal believes that McNair could even
make a full-back position his own for the next ten
years, so much is his promise at present, while the
chances will head his way.
.
“He has done it already in the second team and
has done it now at a higher level in the first-team.
.
“Maybe he shall be the right full-back of
Manchester United for the next 10 years, you
never know. He has the chance.”
.
McNair was originally a central midfielder when
progressing through the youth ranks at Old
Trafford before being dropped back into the heart
of defence.
