Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri has honored a notable native son and former minister by naming a major roadway in Yola after Dr. Mahmud Tukur.
Fintiri has decided to honor Mahmud Tukur, the brother of Bamangar Tukur, a former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), by changing the name of Abuja Road in the Yola South Local Government Area to Dr. Mahmud Tukur Street.
Dr. Mahmud Tukur, a renowned scholar and philanthropist, served as the first Vice Chancellor of Bayero University in Kano and as Minister of Commerce and Industry under former President Muhammadu Buhari’s military regime in Nigeria.

Buhari’s marriage to Aisha, also an Adamawa native, is widely believed to have been facilitated by Mahmud Tukur, who is well-known to be a close buddy of Buhari.
Mahmud Tukur passed away in 2021 at the age of 82, having served Adamawa State and the country admirably.
The Abuja Road in Yola Town of Yola will now be known as Dr. Mahmud Tukur Road, as announced by Alice Ambrose, general manager of the Adamawa State Urban and Regional Planning Development Board.
She said that designating a major thoroughfare after the late Dr. Mahmud Tukur would help ensure that his legacy would not be forgotten and that people would be more likely to pray for him as a result.
She remarked, “The Late Dr. Mahmud Tukur was a national leader, and immortalizing him in this fashion is the least we can do for him.”
Mahmud Tukur, who was born in Yola in 1939, attended the University of Wales to earn his bachelor’s degree in international relations and political science. He earned a master’s degree in international affairs from Pitt and a doctorate in public administration from ABU in Zaria.
