Michael Keane’s prospective move to Manchester United appears unlikely to materialise with the England defender eager to ensure regular football ahead of next year’s World Cup.
United’s £30million capture of Victor Lindelof has changed the picture.
While the Old Trafford club remain interested in also securing their former academy graduate, Keane is understood to have cooled on the move.
The 24-year-old will only leave Burnley for a club where he is convinced he will play and Everton have now re-emerged as the favourites to land the centre-back.
Liverpool and Tottenham, who have also monitored the situation, may also firm up pursuits.
Keane has one year left on his Turf Moor contract and has rejected offers to stay on improved terms.
But Burnley are determined to get maximum value for a defender who so impressed for his country in March and won players’ player of the season award.
It is believed a transfer at around £25m could be struck, a modest fee in the current market for a nominee as PFA Young Player of the Year.
Keane has been one of the top-flight’s best central defenders this season in a back four but also showed versatility as one of a three for England.
