Abuja (OSGF Report) – The Surveyor-General of the Federation, Peter Chigozie Nwilo (Prof) has described appropriate mapping as essential tool for the sustainable development of every country.
Peter Chigozie Nwilo who made this known when he featured as a guest on the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) platform in Abuja recently, noted that it is on record that the most developed countries in the world are those which are properly mapped. He intensified that with proper mapping; the country would effectively sustain its security measures and check the problem of poor drainage system.
He further pointed out that with proper mapping, adequate drainage installations could be engaged. Adding, there are areas that are supposed to be kept natural for some obvious reasons, but it is unfortunate that some enlightened people do not even understand what a map is. “We all see what happens in developed countries, but we often fail to replicate it in our country,” he said.
The Surveyor-General highlighted some remarkable milestones which the office has recorded since its establishment to include the establishment of a Data Centre which provides the opportunity of selling data information. He also informed that the office has a 2.5 meters satellite imagery which covers almost the entire country and is working towards capturing all the roads in the country on a map.
“The office has produced maps of different scales such as 1: 25, 000; 1:50, 000 and 1: 100, 000 and for the first time in the history of this country, we now have ‘Zero Order Control Points’ which are like the skeleton of people. Nigeria is yet the only country that has achieved this feat in the Sub-Saharan Africa,” he averred. Nwilo also disclosed that his office has produced a national atlas for the country which is presently awaiting presidential approval for publishing.
