Senator David Mark has called on the international community to support Nigeria to end the menace of Boko Haram in the country.
The Senate President solicited the support, while addressing the 131st session of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Conference going on in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to him, Boko Haram and other terrorists groups are capable of wiping out nations if urgent efforts are not taken to contain them.
Mark said Nigeria had taken measures necessary to end the activities of Boko Haram despite the violence the sect is continually unleashing on the country. He however asked for the support of the international community to ensure insurgency ends soon in the country.
In his speech on “Achieving Gender Equality, Ending Violence Against Women”, at the conference, Mark, who was represented by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Inter- Parliamentary Affairs, Senator Abdulazeez Usman said actions should be expedited to end violence of all kinds especially against women and children, pointing out adding that women are the hardest hit by insurgency in Nigeria.
Six months ago, over 200 girls were abducted from their school in Chibok, Borno State by Islamist sect Boko Haram. Despite the government’s efforts at rescuing them, only few of the girls have been able to escape the stronghold of their abductors.
Thousands have been killed in Nigeria since the sect started its campaign of terror in Nigeria in 2009.
