The Minister of Labour and Employment (State), Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, took decisive action on Friday by personally visiting Ogun State and ordering the closure of the Metal Manufacturing Company in Gbara, near Sotubo, Sagamu Local Government.
The shutdown was initiated due to the company’s failure to address dangerous health hazards faced by its workers.
Minister Onyejeocha disclosed that she had received numerous petitions highlighting the firm’s unhealthy practices.

The company, specializing in battery manufacturing, had reportedly neglected to provide essential protective gear for its workers, despite repeated warnings from the Occupational Safety and Health Department of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment.
Expressing her dissatisfaction with the company’s non-compliance with safety regulations, the minister emphasized that her visit was prompted by the management’s refusal to adhere to national laws and global standards, necessitating the imposition of sanctions.
Onyejeocha remarked, “After being told of what is happening here at this company, I told my staff to come around and instruct them to do what the law says because they deal with lead, which is quite harmful.
I told them that the company should do some cleaning up and ensure that their workers are properly kitted so that their lives will not be endangered unnecessarily but I later got the report that the company has refused to do anything.”
During her visit, the minister observed the deplorable conditions, including workers without protective gear, handling materials with bare hands, and lacking necessary safety equipment. She sternly declared the company prohibited until the management complies with the stipulated laws and regulations.
Onyejeocha asserted, “President Tinubu’s government will never tolerate this illegality, especially for those who considered the country a dumping ground and where they could get cheap labour and do things to suit them, making money at the expense of Nigerians.”
She concluded, “President Tinubu’s government is really against these sharp practices, and for those who are not ready to operate according to the rules of the land, they are free to wind up and go; they should stop subjecting our people to such dehumanizing conditions under the guise of providing employment for them.”
