The Minister of state, for Defence, Musiliu Obanikoro has expressed the desire to see Ministry of Defence queued into Subsidy-Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) in 2015 budget.
The Minister made this disclosure during a courtesy call on the Chairman of SURE-P, General (rtd.) Matin Luther Agwai in his office recently to seek for SURE-P’s intervention in the Ministry’s projects and programmes.
Obanikoro congratulated the SURE-P Chairman on his achievements and want Ministry of Defence to be included in SURE-P programmes and projects as the process for next year budget begins.
The Chairman of the Governing Board of National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-formal Education, Dr. Esther Uduehi also called on SURE-P to assist the Commission to tackle the high level of illiteracy in the country.
Dr. Uduehi stated that over 56 Million Nigerians are illiterate while we also have 10.2 Million out of school Children in the Country. “It is a shame that these people, when they drive, it causes accidents, they cannot bank, they keep money at home, when they vote, their votes do not count, they cannot adhere to Doctors’ prescription. We want to see what they can do to improve the situation.”
She said that the Commission wants to establish Learning Centers, engage part time teachers, move awareness around the Country and carry out monitoring and evaluation programmes.
While responding, the Chairman of SURE-P, General Agwai said that every kobo in the budget of SURE-P has been tied to programs and projects. He promised to present their case at the plenary.
