The Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) has announced the arrest of two suspects accused of supplying illicit drugs, uniforms, and other materials to Boko Haram and the Islamic State of West African Province (ISWAP) terrorists operating in the Lake Chad region.
The operation, which signifies a critical disruption of the supply chains sustaining these insurgent groups, also resulted in the rescue of several individuals believed to be family members of the terrorists.
The MNJTF, a coalition force comprising troops from Nigeria, Chad, Cameroon, Niger, and Benin, has been actively combating terrorism in the Lake Chad Basin.

Their latest success was detailed in a statement released by Lt. Col. Olaniyi Osoba, the spokesperson for the task force, on Thursday in Maiduguri.
The statement revealed that the suspects were not only involved in drug trafficking but were also supplying essential materials, including uniforms and flag fabric, which are crucial for the insurgents’ operations.
One of the suspects, whose identity has been withheld, was apprehended by MNJTF troops along the Kekeno-Cross Kauwa road in Borno State.
During the operation, the task force recovered a significant haul of narcotics, including 198 parcels of marijuana.
This discovery points to a sophisticated supply network that facilitates the insurgents’ access to illicit drugs, which are often used to finance their activities or to maintain the morale of their fighters.
In a separate operation, another suspect was intercepted on the Gubio-Damasak road, driving a blue Toyota pickup truck with the registration number JAK 49 XA (Yobe). A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered two sacks containing 19 bundles of clothing materials.
According to Lt. Col. Osoba, these materials were likely intended for making uniforms and flags for Boko Haram and ISWAP fighters, further emphasising the suspect’s role in supporting the logistical needs of the terrorist groups.
The MNJTF’s actions did not stop at disrupting the supply lines; they also rescued three women and a baby, who are suspected to be family members of the terrorists.
These individuals claimed to have fled from the terrorist enclaves in the southern Lake Chad islands, specifically in Marte Local Government Area of Borno State.
The rescued individuals are currently undergoing medical assessments and profiling, which are standard procedures to ensure their health and to verify their claims about their escape from the insurgent camps.
Lt. Col. Osoba highlighted the significance of these operations, noting that they represent a major stride in the ongoing battle against terrorism in the Lake Chad region.
By targeting and dismantling the supply networks that keep these groups operational, the MNJTF is effectively weakening the terrorists’ capabilities.
This approach not only disrupts the direct supply of resources but also hampers the insurgents’ ability to maintain their forces, which are crucial for their sustained attacks in the region.
The MNJTF continues to work diligently to ensure that the Lake Chad Basin is rid of terrorist activities.
This success demonstrates the importance of coordinated international efforts in addressing regional security challenges. The task force remains committed to its mission of eradicating terrorism and restoring peace in the area.
Further investigations are underway to trace the origins of the seized materials and to identify additional members of the supply network.
The suspects will face the full extent of the law once all evidence has been gathered.
The MNJTF’s actions are a stark reminder that supporting terrorist activities, directly or indirectly, will not go unpunished.
The recent arrests and rescues highlight the critical role of intelligence and surveillance in counterterrorism operations.
The MNJTF is leveraging advanced technologies and collaborative efforts among member states to track and intercept supplies meant for terrorist groups.
These measures are essential for sustaining the momentum against Boko Haram and ISWAP, whose actions have caused significant suffering and instability in the region.
As the MNJTF continues its operations, there is hope that the dismantling of supply chains and the rescue of innocent civilians will contribute significantly to the overall goal of achieving lasting peace and security in the Lake Chad region.
