Two revenue collectors allegedly working with the Anambra State government were set ablaze by an irate mob in Onitsha on Friday following the death of a bystander.
The tragic incident occurred at Old Market Road, along Venn Road by Egerton, when a tipper driver, reportedly chased by the revenue agents, lost control of his vehicle.
The vehicle rammed into a passerby, killing him on the spot.

Eyewitnesses alleged that the revenue collectors were dragging the tipper’s steering with the driver, leading to the accident.
Videos circulating on social media showed the mob attacking two of the agents with objects before setting them ablaze. The bodies of the victims were seen burning in the footage.
A witness recording the incident said, “There was chaos in Onitsha this morning as an angry mob set ablaze two revenue touts, while four others managed to escape.
“The revenue collectors, numbering about six, were chasing a tipper driver over money they demanded.
During the chase, they started dragging the steering with him, causing the driver to lose control and hit a passerby, who died instantly.
“After seeing the damage caused, the revenue agents tried to flee, but the mob caught two of them and set them ablaze.”
The witness further lamented, “This is one death too many in Anambra. These revenue touts have caused more deaths than any other issue in the state.”
Another source, a trader in the area, corroborated the story, stating, “The revenue men were dragging the tipper’s steering because the driver refused to give them a bribe.
When the accident happened, they tried to run, but people caught two of them.”
The incident has sparked outrage online, with many calling for the regulation of revenue collection activities in the state.
When contacted, the Anambra State Police Command spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident and stated that the police had swiftly responded to the situation.
“Anambra Police responded promptly upon receiving information about the fatal accident.
We are collaborating with relevant authorities to ascertain the facts and ensure such incidents are prevented in the future,” Ikenga said.
He added that investigations were ongoing and promised to provide further updates as more details emerge.
