Dr. Love Obiani Iwori was arraigned by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday before Justice R. I. Ahiakwo of the Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, on a one- count charge bordering on issuance of dishonored cheque to the tune of Four Million Naira (N4,000,000.00).
Dr. Love Obiani allegedly presented a cheque of N4million in payment for a 2008 model Toyota Avalon saloon car belonging to the complainant, Lawal Babangida, which on presentation at the bank was returned unpaid due to insufficient funds.
She pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to her.
Count one reads, “that you Dr. Love Obiani Iwori on or about the 6th day of March, 2015 at Port Harcourt in the Port Harcourt Judicial Division of the High Court of Rivers State did fraudulently issue a Diamond Bank Plc Cheque dated 6th day of March 2015 in the sum of Four Million Naira (N4,000,000.00) in favour of one Lawal Babangida which was to settle your financial obligation with the said Lawal Babangida and when the said cheque was presented for payment within three months of its issue, it was dishonored due to insufficient funds standing to your credit and thereby committed an offence of Issuance of Dishonored Cheques contrary to section 1 (1) (b) (i) & (ii) of the Dishonored Cheques (Offences) Act, CAP. D11 of the Revised Edition (Laws of the Federation) 2007”.
In view of her plea, counsel to EFCC, R. E. Alao, urged the court to fix a date to commence trial.
However, the defence counsel, Chief O. Amachree, informed the court that he filed a bail application and served same to the prosecution, praying the court to grant his prayers.
Justice Ahiakwo granted the accused person bail on self recognition, ordered her to deposit 2 passport photograph and her international passport with the court registrar.
The matter was adjourned to 6 June, 2016 for trial. [EFCC]
