House of Representatives Deputy Spokesperson Philip Agbese is confident that President Bola Tinubu’s support of Tajudeen Abbas as Speaker of the House will be well received by Nigerians in the near future.
In April of 2023, the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) endorsed Abbas as their Speaker candidate.
Tinubu’s advice led to the party’s support for Abbas, resulting in other contestants standing down in time for the 10th Assembly’s inauguration.
Addressing the media from his office, Agbese acknowledged the decisiveness of both the President and the APC in selecting Abbas.
In his words, “recommending Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, to be Speaker of the 10th House of Representatives is one of the greatest steps taken in the right direction by Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and our great party, the APC.”
Agbese went on to gush about Abbas’s great leadership and legislative skills. He praised the 10th Assembly’s legislative agenda, saying it provided a solid basis for the House’s work because it included the creation of comprehensive policies and programs.
He continued on Abbas’s pledge to transparency and training, saying, “The Speaker is committed to open NASS, where all and sundry would be abreast with the workings and events of the House in what we call citizens engagements. He’s dedicated to making sure everyone who works in the House, from members to bureaucrats to reporters, gets the best education possible.
Agbese lauded the swift adaption of members when asked about the early worries regarding the Assembly’s functionality due to the predominance of novice MPs.
He remarked on how well the legislative process was running thanks to their discipline in following House rules and conducting themselves during discussions.
Agbese lauded recent successes like the successful revision of the House’s standing rules, crediting the work of Abbas and Benjamin Kalu for their direction.
He also noted the improvement in communication and cooperation between the executive and legislative branches, to the benefit of all Nigerians.
Agbese ended on a hopeful note, predicting that Nigerians will acknowledge Tinubu’s role in recommending Abbas.
