The newly sworn-in Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Kudirat Motomori Olatokunbo Kekere-Ekun, has pledged that obedience to court orders will be non-negotiable under her leadership.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday during the commencement of the 2024/2025 legal year and the inauguration of 87 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), Justice Kekere-Ekun emphasised that no individual or institution, regardless of their status, will be allowed to undermine the authority of the judiciary.
She made it clear that the judiciary remains steadfast in upholding the sanctity of court judgments in accordance with the rule of law, warning that disobedience to court rulings would be regarded as a threat to democracy.

“Disobedience to court orders or non-compliance with judicial directives is a direct affront to democracy and an invitation to anarchy,” she stated. “It is critical that we respect and observe all the features of an enduring democracy, for in doing so, we maintain the delicate balance that sustains our society.”
Justice Kekere-Ekun called for collective efforts to ensure that Nigeria continues to adhere to the rule of law, uphold democratic practices, and protect the rights of its citizens.
She further emphasised the judiciary’s role in safeguarding Nigerians’ rights against oppression and impunity by fully utilising legal instruments.
Underlining her determination to restore public confidence in the judiciary, the CJN acknowledged the various challenges that have tarnished the judiciary’s reputation over the years but assured that a new era of accountability and integrity is underway.
“Over the years, various factors have contributed to the negative image of the judiciary. However, we are determined to change the narrative and make the judiciary a source of pride for all Nigerians,” she said.
“When the legal compass of a nation falters, everything suffers, including public and international perception.”
Justice Kekere-Ekun also addressed the issue of forum shopping by some lawyers, which has led to the issuance of conflicting court orders.
She warned that such practices, which have brought disrepute to the judiciary, would no longer be tolerated, and offenders would face consequences.
“There will be consequences for any act of indiscretion that could bring the judiciary to disrepute,” she warned.
The CJN’s speech sets a firm tone for her tenure, with a focus on restoring respect for court rulings, enhancing the judiciary’s image, and ensuring that the rule of law is upheld in Nigeria.
