Andoni Zubizarreta told Cadena Cope he wants Neymar to remain at Paris Saint-Germain next season because he makes French football more prominent.
Neymar joined PSG last summer in a world-record €222 million move from Barcelona but has been strongly linked with a return to La Liga, with AS reporting the 26-year-old forward is already negotiating with Real Madrid.
“I want Neymar to continue in France,” said Zubizarreta, the former Barcelona goalkeeper. “It’s good for French football. For us, it’s important that he plays in France because he is a player that attracts a lot of attention and lets people know that teams like Marseille, Nantes, Guingamp exist and are followed. If he were to continue here, it would be very interesting, despite the fact that he is at PSG, a historic rival of Marseille.”
Neymar has been sidelined with a foot injury since February but returned to Paris last week to finalise his recovery.
The Brazil international was in the crowd at the Stade de France on Tuesday night as his teammates completed the domestic treble with a 2-0 win over third-tier Les Herbiers in the Coupe de France final.
