Threatening military intervention in the current political instability in the Niger Republic, Russia has warned the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
This, Russia has warned, could lead to a dangerous escalation of the crisis.
On Thursday, the heads of ECOWAS member states decided to deploy a “standby force” to Niger in an effort to restore constitutional democracy and return deposed President Mohamed Bazoum.

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu, who is also the current chair of ECOWAS, has stated categorically that “no option is off the table, including the use of force as a last resort.”
However, Russia warns that a military option could lead to a “protracted confrontation.”
The Russian foreign ministry warned that a military solution to the problem in Niger might lead to a prolonged confrontation in the African country and a dramatic destabilisation of the situation in the Sahara-Sahel region as a whole.
The coup leaders do not have Russia’s official support.
