Speaking to journalists, the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, Maj. Gen. Yusha’u Abubakar said after the capture of Banki, a Nigerian border town with Cameroon, on Thursday, over 200 members of the insurgency group willingly surrendered to the military.
“I have just received information from our troops about an hour ago that over 200 Boko Haram insurgents surrendered to them,” Abubakar told journalists on Friday.
Banki town, an economically important and strategic town in Borno State noted for fishing was earlier liberated by troops, destroying 7 Boko Haram camps and successfully detonating 7 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). The troops also succeeded in discovering and detonating 13 IEDs between Darel Jamal and Banki.
Several Boko Haram terrorists were killed and several others were captured alive between Banki junction and Ngorosoye during the encounter.
A statement by the military said the recapture of the strategic town was facilitated by concerted efforts of the Nigerian Air Force and close liaison with the Cameroon’s Army.
