Renowned nation-builder and motivational speaker, Fela Durotoye, has called on Nigerians to embrace a spirit of selfless service and rise as heroes during this critical period in the country’s history.
In a detailed statement addressing public discourse on the cost of governance, Durotoye debunked misinformation that listed him as a current media aide to the President.
He clarified that he served as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on National Values and Social Justice (SSA-NVSJ) for six months, from October 2023 to March 2024, without receiving any salary or allowances.

Durotoye explained his decision to volunteer for the role without compensation, stating it was motivated by his commitment to nation-building. “When I was invited to serve, I made it clear that I would not accept a salary or allowances.
Every expense—rent, transportation, and utilities—was borne by me and my family. My service to Nigeria cost the government nothing,” he said.
During his tenure, he and his team developed a strategic national plan aimed at fostering civic engagement and nation-building.
This included inspiring 50 million Nigerians to adopt values of leadership and excellence, onboarding 500,000 citizens to a Nation Builders Network, and training one million public officers in service excellence—without incurring any government expenditure.
Durotoye highlighted the efforts of unsung heroes in his team, including professionals like Jimi Tewe, Evelyn Paul, and Simi Afilaka, who worked tirelessly without pay. “These heroes volunteered their time and resources, making sacrifices for the greater good of our nation. Their dedication inspires hope that we can build the Nigeria of our dreams,” he added.
He urged Nigerians to recognize that not everyone in government is corrupt or self-serving. While acknowledging the existence of villains in public office, Durotoye emphasized that many individuals in government are working selflessly to effect positive change.
“The erroneous belief that everyone in government is a thief undermines the efforts of those striving to make a difference. Heroes exist in government, private sector, and civil society—people who sacrifice personal comfort to serve our nation with integrity,” he noted.
Durotoye encouraged Nigerians to step up as heroes in various sectors, from governance to education, healthcare, and social development.
He outlined key areas where contributions are needed, including hunger alleviation, education, energy, and safety.
He concluded with a clarion call for national unity and selfless service: “Nigeria needs heroes now more than ever. If you can, volunteer to serve. If you can’t, support those who do. Together, we can build a nation we all can be proud of.”
Durotoye’s message serves as a rallying cry for Nigerians to rise above cynicism and take active roles in shaping a better future for the country.
